Programs and Workshops for Schools
I have worked with thousands of elementary school children to develop their writing and illustrating skills. I regularly draw on childhood memories to create my books and enjoy sharing this process with children as they grow and develop their own memories into illustrated stories.

A typical school day visit includes two morning slide shows – one for the older students, one for the younger – followed by book signing, lunch, then two double-classroom workshops in the afternoon. Often schools will choose to stage my evening program, Drawing on Family Stories, as well.

Fees: full day, four presentations: $1000; half day, two presentations, $600, additional evening program, $300.

Audience Response
The response to these presentations has been very gratifying. Here are some samples:

"I'd like to extend heartfelt thanks for your inspired workshops with our students. Both teachers and students clearly enjoyed working with you and learned a great deal in the process."
Anne Mulherkar, Powerful Writers, Seattle

"What a wonderful zap of creative energy, the little engine that could, the force of the human spirit. Thanks."
Catherine Ventura, Teacher, Taipei American School, Taiwan

"I just had to send a note to tell you what rave reviews you are getting here. Should you ever need references for school visits, send them our way."
Mary Jo Langhorne, Media and Technology coordinator, Iowa City schools

Conference Presentations
Over the past few years, I have presented many workshops for state and national associations of teachers, librarians and writers. Typically, I talk about my work, including a discussion of how to develop writing through drawing. Groups I have addressed include the Society of Children's Books Writers and Illustrators (Washington, Oregon, Northern and Southern California chapters); National Conference for Teachers of English, International Reading Association, American Association of School Librarians, California Association of School Librarians, the California Reading Association, Northwest Bookfest, local reading councils, the Oregon Educational Media Association and the Washington Library and Media Association.

With writer George Shannon, I created the Seattle-area "Inside Story," a twice-yearly showcase where local children's writers and illustrators present their new books. At this event – now co-sponsored by the Seattle SCBWI and independent booksellers – our children's book community gathers to celebrate new work. If you are a bookseller or librarian or teacher, you are welcome to add your name to our invitation list by emailing me your address.
